"The Beatles Open End Interview"
PRO 2548, Issued February 1964
COMPACT 33 SLEEVE & DISC
PROMOTION COPY "NOT FOR SALE"
(CAPPRO 2548.01, Spizer)
To
encourage disc jockeys to promote the Beatles, Capitol prepared
open-end interview records that allowed a disc jockey to give the
impression
that he was personally conducting an in-station interview with the group.
The illusion
was created by combining a script of statements and questions to ask the
group
with a record containing gaps of silence for the DJ to read the script
between
the prerecorded responses of the boys.
As part of its
Beatles campaign, Capitol sent copies of the first
Beatles interview record to broadcasters in February, 1964. It was titled
The Beatles Open-End Interview. The interview record was produced
by
Jack Wagner, who apparently prepared the script and edited comments of the
group to form a brief interview leading up to the playing of the
hit single I Want To Hold Your Hand. The second and final open-end
was
The Beatles' Second Album, released in April 1964.
The Beatles'
Open-End Interview disc was sent with a black & white
picture sleeve
(CAPPRO 2548.PS1, Spizer). The straight cut side contains the text of
the interview printed below the title of the disc. The DJ lines are in
bold print and
the Beatles responses are in italics.
(ACTUAL SCANS OF THIS
ITEM)

The open tab side
of the sleeve has "SIDE TWO" and "PRO 2549" centered at the top :

This most superb
example of the first Open-End Interview set is an absolute
winner indeed. The Sleeve grades at a brilliant Near Mint
displaying a bright, clean "white" backround and bold crisp
graphics, with simply a very slight, hardly perceivable "hint"
of record impression in the center area of Side Two only.
All edges and corners are sharp. No splits, No tears.

The Record is a gem and has never
seen a turntable, grading as a
shimmering, glistening Mint Unplayed status.

"The Beatles' SECOND Open End Interview"
PRO 2598-99, Issued
April 1964
COMPACT 33 SLEEVE & DISC
PROMOTION COPY "NOT FOR SALE"
(CAPPRO 2598.01, Spizer)
To
encourage disc jockeys to promote the Beatles, Capitol prepared
open-end interview records that allowed a disc jockey to give the
impression
that he was personally conducting an in-station interview with the group.
The Beatles Open-End Interview (see that item above).
Capitol then
prepared the second and final open-end
interview record
to help promote The Beatles' Second Album, released in April 1964.
When these do
surface they are found in horrendous condition.
Yet, this is a most superb example of the Second Open-End Interview
set, and is an absolute
winner indeed.
The straight cut
side of The Beatles'
Second Open-End Interview
picture sleeve (CAPPRO 2598.PS1, Spizer)
contains the text of the
interview printed below the title of the disc. The title has the same
graphics and color scheme of the title printed on the album's front
cover.
The DJ lines are in bold black print and the Beatles
responses are in red italic letters. The Capitol logo and the production
credit appear in black in the lower right corner :
(ACTUAL SCANS)

The open tab side of the picture sleeve has "SIDE TWO" in the
upper left corner and "PRO 2599" in the upper right corner.
The Capitol logo appears top center above a 4" X 4" illustration of the
front cover to The Beatles' Second Album.
The titles to the songs on Side 2,
namely Please Mr. Postman and Thank You Girl, appear below
the cover
along with the phrase "Open-end interview with the BEATLES and
"ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN" on Side One. On the album cover,
"THE BEATLES" is in red. The rest of the print is in black :

The sleeve grades at a solid and
beautiful VG++,
(bordering NM -) displaying some record impression near the bottom
edge and very minimal sporadic ringwear that is slightly
evident only around the top of the center area of this shiny, glossy sleeve.
The sleeve remains flat and there are no tears, rips or splits anywhere.
Like its predecessor, the record
contains an open-end interview
leading up to a featured song on Side 1 (PRO 2598) and two songs from
the album on Side 2 (PRO 2599). This interview was also produced by Jack
Wagner,
who apparently used the same basic interview he had used for the first
record.
In fact, one of George's answers on this second interview disc is
merely an edit of a response that appeared on the first record.
The 7" interview
record has a small play hole and the same label backdrops as those
used for the Capitol Compact 33 discs. The star symbol etched in the
trail-off areas
indicate that the disc was manufactured in Hollywood and
pressed by
Capitol's Los Angeles factory. This would be true for the
sleeve as well,
due to the tab cut style that the west coast sleeves are known for.

Simply put, the
Record is a jewel, grading a Mint Unplayed status.
Just glorious, as are the Labels.
It is believed
that less than a thousand of the
The Beatles' Second Open-End Interview sets were
prepared,
making it extremely rare and highly collectible -
especially in this
marvelous condition !!

S-4152-I, Early 1964
ONE-SIDED
ULTRA-RARE "PROMOTION COPY" 45 SINGLE
WHITE LABEL BLACK
PRINT
(4152.DJ2F, Spizer)
Swan's initial
release of She Loves You on its white label with red print in 1963
failed miserably and sales were horrible. By the time Swan reissued She
Loves You
on its black label with silver print in January 1964, Beatlemania had
finally reached America.
On its second go-round, the single was an instant hit. After spending four
weeks at
number two behind Capitol's I Want To Hold Your Hand, Swan's
entry into the Beatles'
sweepstakes topped the charts for two weeks and went on to sell
over two and a half million copies.
When She Loves
You began dropping off the charts, Swan attempted to get additional
mileage out of the single by promoting its B-Side. To prompt disc jockeys
to play
I'll Get You, Swan issued this VERY RARE White Label Promotional
single
with I'll Get You on one side and a blank side and label on
the other.
This Promotional one-sided 45 is very scarce, for not many were pressed
!!!
(ACTUAL SCANS)

This particular
variation is the East Coast issue of the Promo 45 and was
pressed by RCA's Rockaway factory. (Spizer, Beatlology Magazine Vol. 2
No.5).
The correct trail-off areas of this record
has the VIRTUE STUDIO markings in the trail-off wax,
and wide spaced grooves on the non-music blank side.

Swan 4182, 5/21/64
DISC JOCKEY
ADVANCE
COPY,
"Promotional Copy" & "Not For Sale"
(SWAN 4182.DJ1B, Spizer)
The German-lyric recording of Sie
Liebt Dich was recorded
by the Beatles on January 29, 1964 and was issued in Germany
on the Odeon label in mid March 1964.
On or about May 21, 1964, Swan released a single pairing
Sie Liebt Dich (She Loves You) with the same master recording
of I'll Get You that served as the B-side to She Loves You.
The record lists the group as "DIE BEATLES" on its A-side label.
(ACTUAL SCANS)

Swan was hoping
that the novelty of hearing the Beatles sing in German
would be enough to obtain radio air play and sales. It wasn't, for it
dipped to
number 97 before disappearing from the Billboard charts.
Furthermore, Swan had the rights to the specific master recordings,
but not the songs themselves and were sued by Capitol Records.
Swan settled the lawsuit, and the settlement killed any chance
of Sie Liebt Dich becoming a hit in the U.S.
This explains the record's relative scarcity.
This stellar
Monarch pressing of the Promotional disc
is pressed in styrene and has Virtue Studio hand etched markings
including the job numbers hand etched in their trail off areas.
The A-side has "PROMOTIONAL COPY" in the lower left
and a printed "X" in the lower right.
The "DON'T DROP OUT" print is also there in the upper left,
as it is on all of the white label copies of this release.

The B-side has
"PROMOTIONAL COPY" in the lower left
and "NOT FOR SALE" in the lower right.

The condition of
the Vinyl is an UNPLAYED PRISTINE Mint Minus
with grooves that display a gleaming, brilliant and shiny high-gloss
sheen.
The Labels are mere perfection, snow white Near Mint
with deep, dark black fonts.

Because this
single sold poorly and had limited distribution,
all stock copy variations are relatively rare.
Yet more important, the Promotional singles are even scarcer,
and we are proud to offer such a MAGNIFICENT example here.
