Vee Jay 498, 2/20/63, OSC,
VJ 498.02, Spizer (Colorband & Oval) Thick Font Print

"BEATTLES" (Two-T)

(ACTUAL SCANS)

The first record released in the United States to bear
the Beatles name was VJ 498,
which was released on or about February 20, 1963.

Vee-Jay wasn't quite sure what it had with The Beatles,
and interestingly enough,
Vee-Jay did not even know how to spell the group's name.
All initial issues of the record added an extra "T" to the name.
IT Is the most sought after as collectors are attracted to the
novelty of the misspelled name, and to the record's status
as the first Beatles record issued in the U.S.

It is estimated that less than 7,500 copies in total of
ALL the label variations of VJ498 were pressed. This includes Oval
or Brackets Labels and the Double "T" or One "T" in the group's name.

THERE WERE THREE STOCK COPY LABEL VARIATIONS OF
THE "DOUBLE T" VEE JAY 498. THIS VARIATION WITH THE
"THICK FONT" VERSION OF THE RECORD
HAS BEEN ASSIGNED NUMBER "VJ498.02, SPIZER".
IT HAS SILVER LETTERING ON A BLACK LABEL WITH AN OVAL LOGO
AND OUTER RIM COLORBAND. tHE "mr" SYMBOL MACHINE STAMPED
IN THE TRAIL OFF AREAS INDICATE THAT THIS STYRENE DISC WAS
PRESSED BY MONARCH RECORDS. THE TRAIL OFF AREAS
ALSO CONTAIN THE HAND ETCHED JOB NUMBERS.

The condition of this piece is astonishing and is in
shimmering mint minus unplayed condition. it has never
seen a turntable. virtually flawless and pristine.
The labels grade a wonderful Mint MINUS as well,
with a shiny gloss and clear rich fonts

"BEATLES" (One-T)

Shortly after THE RELEASE OF THE "DOUBLE t" ERROR
IN THE GROUP'S NAME, Vee-Jay realized the error
(and soaring sales), corrected the group's name on the labels,
HENCE THIS NEXT LABEL VARIATION WITH THE
CORRECTED SPELLING OF THE "BEATLES" on their first 45 !

(ACTUAL SCANS)

This variation featuring the oval logo"
has the song titles and the group's name in thicker print
and is much different in appearance than on the
other variations. the "MR" symbol machine stamped in the
trail off areas indicate that this styrene disc
was pressed by monarch records.

This rarity is in tremendous condition,
GRADING A GLEAMING NEAR MINT MINUS ON THE VINYL
RETAINING A DEEP SHEEN TO GROOVES ON BOTH SIDES.
THIS 45 HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF OVER THE YEARS.
THIS RECORD WOULD GRADE A SUPER NEAR MINT IF NOT FOR SOME
LIGHT HAIRLINE SLEEVE PULLS ONLY EVIDENT ON
RUN-OUT DEAD WAX.

THE LABELS ARE A BOLD, VIBRANT NEAR MINT ON BOTH SIDES.

The B-SIDE condition IS A VERY RESPECTABLE HIGH VG ++,
ALSO RETAINING A BEAUTIFUL LUSTER TO THE VINYL.
THE LABELS ALSO GRADE A VG ++, WITH DARK COLORS, AND ONLY FLAW
COMES FROM THE FACTORY THAT IS COMMON WITH VEE-JAY ON THE
MANNER OF LABEL APPLICATION DISPLAYING THREE SLIGHT WRINKLES.
THESE WRINKLES ARE unobtrusive, YET MENTIONED FOR ACCURACY.

"BEATTLES" (Two-T)
Rarest Version : " #498 "

The first record released in the United States to bear
the Beatles name was VJ 498,
which was released on or about February 20, 1963.

Vee-Jay wasn't quite sure what it had with The Beatles,

of ALL the label variations of VJ498 were pressed.
This includes Oval or Brackets Labels and the
Double "T" or One "T" in the group's name.

(ACTUAL SCAN)

THERE WERE THREE LABEL VARIATIONS OF THE "DOUBLE T" VEE JAY 498.
This VARIATION INCLUDES A  "
# "  SYMBOL PRECEDING THE RECORD NUMBER,
THE WORDS "VOCAL" AND "TIME" AND THE PUBLISHING INFORMATION
ENTIRELY IN CAPITAL LETTERS, THE SONGWRITER CREDITS IN MICROPRINT
AND THE LACK OF A PRESSING PLANT LOGO IN THE TRAIL-OFF AREAS.
IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THIS VARIATION WAS
MANUFACTURED BY SOUTHERN PLASTICS.

OF THE THREE MISSPELLED LABEL VARIATIONS,
THIS " #498 " VERSION IS THE RAREST.

(ACTUAL SCANS)

The condition of this piece is simply STUNNING.
IF THIS RECORD WAS PLAYED THREE TIMES -
WE'D BE SURPRISED !! IT'S THAT CLEAN !
The labels grade a wonderful Near Mint,
with a shiny HIGH gloss AND
clear rich fonts still intact. ONLY SIGN OF MINIMAL
AND A SOFT TOUCH OF WEAR IS ON THE B-SIDE (SEE SCAN BELOW) ,
WHERE THE HIGH RIDGE OF THE LABEL SHOWS A BIT OF
STACK WEAR. THAT IS THE LIMIT OF WEAR.
THE colorband remains vibrant !

The vinyl on both sides are a VIBRANT NEAR MINT,
AND OBVIOUS THAT THIS RECORD HAD BEEN WELL CARED FOR.
a great sheen remains evident to the grooves.

"BEATLES" (One-T)

(ACTUAL SCANS)

Shortly after THE RELEASE OF THE
"DOUBLE t" ERROR IN THE GROUP'S NAME,
Vee-Jay realized the error (and soaring sales),
corrected the group's name on the labels,
HENCE THIS NEXT LABEL VARIATION
WITH THE CORRECTED SPELLING OF THE "BEATLES" on their first 45 !

It is estimated that less than 7,500 copies in total of
ALL the label variations of VJ498 were pressed.
This includes Oval or Brackets Labels and the Double "T" or
One "T" in the group's name. This "BRACKETS" 498 backdrop
variation were first printed by Ivy Hill Lithograph Corp.
in Great Neck, New York, in January 1964.
The record was pressed by Monarch.

YET, WHAT IS A MOST VITAL STATISTIC is that a review
of invoice summary sheets for the first quarter of
1964 indicates that ONLY
1,650 copies of the BRACKETS Label
variation were pressed and sold in early March 1964 !!!

So it should come by no surprise that all
versions of this record are quite scarce,
and these labels with the CORRECTED spelling of the group's name
are few and much farther between the misspelled labels !!

The condition of this rarity is truly stellar all the way,
SO CLOSE TO PERFECTION and graded at a sparkling MINT MINUS.
IT GLISTENS AND APPEARS THIS RECORD HAS NOT BEEN PLAYED,
AND IF SO, PERHAPS ONCE ! The Labels are equally fantastic,
deep and rich - and the silver print font is clear and crisp !

Vee Jay 522, 5/27/63, OSC,
VJ 522.04 (Colorband & BRACKETS)

MEGA RARE "BRACKETS" LOGO LABEL

Although Vee-Jay distributed three times as many copies
of VJ522 than VJ498, one should not draw the conclusion
that this record is easily obtainable. As more and more
collectors have added this record to their
permanent collections, fewer copies are available
for trade or purchase. When one considers
that VJ522.02 (see next record below) is the only variation
of this single to have been pressed in relatively
greater amounts to meet local demand, it is not surprising
that all other variations of this record
are among the RARER Beatles singles !!

(ACTUAL SCAN)

Out of the 21,225 copies sold of VJ522, it is estimated that only 7,500
were pressed with labels having the brackets logo.
This explains why the later 1964 bracket label releases are
rarer and more valuable than the most common
of the three original oval variations.

The condition of this example is STUNNING. The labels are
a glossy Near Mint, and the vinyl is a great Near Mint Minus,
with an incredible gleam to the grooves still evident.
JUST ONE LIGHT SUPERFICIAL SCRATCH ON EACH SIDE
PREVENTS A NEAR MINT GRADING !

OF THE THREE OVAL VARIATIONS OF VJ522,
THIS STYRENE PRESSING WITH THE "THICK" PRINT IS THE MOST COMMON.

(ACTUAL SCANS)

THIS IS BECAUSE FROM ME TO YOU ACHIEVED SOME REGIONAL SUCCESS
IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA IN 1963, THUS PROMPTING VEE-JAY TO
HAVE LOS ANGELES BASED MONARCH RECORDS PRESS MORE COPIES
OF THE RECORD THAN THE OTHER REGIONAL
FACTORIES TO MEET THIS LOCAL DEMAND.

CONDITION OF THE VINYL IS A GORGEOUS NEAR MINT. THE LABELS ARE

OF THE THREE ORIGINAL OVAL LOGO PRESSINGS OF VJ522,

THIS VERSION (VJEP 903.06, SPIZER) HAS THIN MICROPRINT AND
"SIDE 1" AND "SIDE 2". IT'S TRAIL OFF AREAS INCLUDE THE HAND-ETCHED
JOB NUMBER
Δ51772. ALTHOUGH THE MONARCH RECORDS SYMBOL
DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE TRAIL OFF AREAS, THIS STYRENE
PRESSING OF THE EP WAS CLEARLY MANUFACTURED BY MONARCH
CONTEMPORANEOUSLY WITH THE
"DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET" SINGLE.

ON SIDE 2, TAKE NOTICE THAT THE "ASK ME WHY" PRINT
IS IN SLIGHTLY LARGER PRINT  :

Condition of the vinyl and labels on side 1 is a
solid NEAR MINT MINUS with its only minor flaw being a small scuff
on the trail off area. side two grades a very strong VG++,
bordering near mint minus. the accompanying cardboard
picture sleeve is a terrific near mint minus.

Original Early 1964
SINGLES MAILER
UNUSED !  NEW FROM SHIPPING BOX !

VEE-JAY USED CUSTOMIZED MAILERS TO SEND PROMOTIONAL COPIES
OF ITS SINGLES TO RADIO STATIONS AND RECORD REVIEWERS.
THE MAILER PICTURED ABOVE, (VJ M.1, SPIZER PAGE 105),
WAS PRINTED AFTER THE COMPANY MOVED ITS
HEADQUARTERS TO CALIFORNIA IN EARLY 1964.

A FEW UNUSED COPIES OF THIS MAILER HAVE SURVIVED -
AND WE HAVE THEM !

THESE MAILERS ARE EXTREMELY RARE TO SAY THE LEAST
AND ARE HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE - ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION !!

In the fall of 1962, Vee-Jay established a subsidiary label to issue
oldies 45s containing songs that previously appeared on Vee-Jay
and other independent  labels. To ensure that the public knew that the
releases on the label were oldies, Vee-Jay creatively named the label "Oldies".
The label's logo was the word "OLDIES" typed in old-fashioned
large uppercase letters followed by a stylized "45"
and the
® registered trade mark all in white print.
While this might sound old hat now, the concept of issuing oldies
singles in the early sixties was relatively unexplored.
Vee-Jay was clearly a pioneer in this marketing concept.
On August 10, 1964 there were 4 Beatles releases on their "Oldies" label.

ALL OF THE FOLLOWING BEATLES "OLDIES" 45s
ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THE ORIGINAL "OLDIES" SLEEVES
